The Expo Hotels & Resorts chain was founded with the construction of its first hotel, Expo Hotel Barcelona in 1976. This is one of the largest 4-star hotels in the city with 423 rooms, a restaurant, 9 meeting rooms, 3 private dining rooms, an outdoor swimming pool, and an excellent location in one of the most important business centers of Barcelona.
Subsequently, and following the Barcelona model, Expo Hotel Valencia was built—a 3-star hotel with 385 rooms, 9 meeting rooms, a restaurant, and an outdoor swimming pool. This hotel was also strategically located, next to Nuevo Centro (New Center), one of the commercial and business areas of the capital city of Valencia.
Mare Nostrum Resort was conceived as the result of the ideas and work of a visionary man, Antonio Mestre, who, following a trip to Las Vegas, decided to recreate the magnitude of the American city in the south of Tenerife. He was one of the first to build deluxe hotels on the island, along with the only privately owned auditorium in all of Europe, with capacity for 1,876 people.
In 1988, the Mediterranean Palace hotel was inaugurated (and renovated in 2000) on Playa de las Américas (Arona beach). This spectacular hotel offers 535 rooms facing a 1,300 m2 swimming pool. That same year and in the same location, Sir Anthony hotel (renovated in 2008) opened its doors. This hotel has 72 rooms facing the ocean, as well as a swimming pool and gardens.
Between 1996 and 1997, the Cleopatra Palace, Julio Caesar Palace and Marco Antonio Palace were inaugurated. Each offers some 200 rooms and is located around an original Roman pool. In 1996, the Pirámide de Arona (auditorium) was also inaugurated. This is a spectacular building that one of the larggest Auditoriums in Europe: a huge room with seating capacity for 1,874 people, a 350 m2 stage, and equipped with sophisticated audiovisual equipment.
By October 2003, the group acquired the emblematic Hotel Princess Sofia (500 rooms) in the city of Barcelona. In accordance with the Expo Hotels & Resorts policies and philosophy when operating large volume and capacity hotels to provide service for Congresses and Conventions, the administration of the Hotel Princess Sofia focused on positioning becoming a reference among high-range hotels in the city, specializing in congresses, conventions and meetings, using its infrastructure that includes 500 rooms and 28 modular meeting rooms (3,900 m2), which can be adapted to any necessity, as well as being a Wellness Center.
In October 2004 Expo Hotels & Resorts inaugurated a new hotel in Barcelona, the Gran Hotel Torre Catalunya: a 4-star establishment. This hotel is located only a few minutes from the street called Diagonal, which, in turn, is the most important financial center in the city. Likewise, it is next to the Fira de Barcelona (Fair Grounds), 50 m. from the central train station, Sants (Barcelona-Madrid AVE station), 15 minutes from the Barcelona airport, El Prat, a short distance from the most attractive tourist attractions in Barcelona. The hotel is ideally located thanks to the excellent communication with highway access roads to the city.
The 23-floor hotel has 272 rooms (259 rooms and 13 suites), as well as a SPA, a gym, a panoramic restaurant on the 23rd floor ("Restaurante Visual"), 7 meeting rooms and an Auditorium with the capacity for 100 people.
In June of 2006, the group acquired the exclusive Don Carlos Resort & Leisure SPA. This was the tenth hotel incorporated into the group on the Peninsula and the first in the Costa del Sol. The Don Carlos Resort & Leisure SPA, has 251 rooms (241 rooms and 10 very luxurious suites) as well as 24 Beach Suites, exclusive suites located on a private area alongside the resort. In addition, the beach is one of the eight Nikki Beaches existent in the whole world. The tennis academy, “Marcos Tennis Academy”, is nestled within its 40,000 m2 tropical gardens, with a total of 11 courts. Their location next to the most outstanding golf courses in Malaga (Santa María Golf & Country Club, the Río Real Golf Club and the Marbella Golf club) make it the ideal place for golf enthusiasts. Don Carlos Resort & Leisure SPA also has extensive facilities for events and congresses: more than 2,000 square m2 divided into twelve multi-functional rooms.
With the three hotels in Barcelona, the group operates more than 1,200 rooms in the city. All in all, the hotel chain handles more than 2,800 rooms in its 8 hotels in Spain.
